Rearranging Eating Habits for Weight Loss
I went to the doctor several weeks ago for my annual physical. My blood pressure was normal. So was my cardiogram.
A few days after the visit, I received a letter regarding my cholesterol and blood sugar, which were out of whack. I called the doctor, and he said that although I was not diabetic, I was headed on that path and needed to change my diet and exercise plan.
I’ll admit it. Like everyone else, I gained weight during the past 18 plus months of Covid-19. My winter diet consisted of pasta and mac and cheese dishes.
My doctor wanted to prescribe medicine. This is the one time I have ever argued with him in the almost 30 years we have worked together. I have been anti-pill anything throughout my life, excluding aspirin for a headache and antibiotics for bronchitis.
He said, “Yve, no matter what you eat, your body sugar level is not allowing you to process the food properly. That’s what makes you hungry all the time. You only need the lowest dosage of a sugar med. Let’s start with that and go from there.”
I relented but told him that I also wanted to go to a nutritionist for assistance. He agreed and made the referral.
I met with the nutritionist the following week, and we reviewed what and how I had been eating. I…
