Using Present Employment for Future Success

When you think of networking, what comes to mind?

Happy hour with co-workers, hoping for a moment with the big boss?

Coming home after a trade show event with dozens of business cards, not being able to place the faces with the card names?

There is value in using these opportunities, but a far more effective way to secure your future.

Begin with the work relationships you have now, with your bosses, higher-ups and co-workers. I cannot emphasize this enough, from first-hand experience.

Several years ago, I was working for a company that overextended itself, financially. Employees were being forced out to cut costs.

One person being forced out was a gentleman I worked with but who was transferred to another department. When I heard he was being forced out, I took him to lunch. I listened to what he was experiencing in looking for a new position.

A few weeks later, my boss called me into his office, to tell me he was leaving the company, and couldn’t take me where he was going.
