The Meaning of Mariah Carey

A Brief Review of the Singer’s Autobiography

I picked up Mariah Carey’s autobiography as a fan of her music, but by the end of reading the book realized she is a woman of depth and profound character, notwithstanding the bad press she has received over time.

Ms. Carey has overcome tremendous obstacles in her personal life, from leaving a dysfunctional family and then, the dysfunctional marriage to her first husband and manager, Tommy Mottola of Sony Records. She spares no detail regarding harrowing incidents that most of us could not conceive of, or survive. Yet her strong and relentless work ethic from her teenage years as a backup singer and songwriter carried her through the worst challenges and brought her the success that she so richly deserves.

My only regret in reading this book is my deficiency in not knowing all of Mariah Carey’s song lyrics by heart. Musicians and singers who are most familiar with her songs will appreciate the background stories she provides on each one of her hits. I enjoyed reading every story and know if I had all of her music memorized, I’d enjoy it even more.

I didn’t know what to expect in reading this autobiography but am glad I did. Whether or not you are a fan of Ms. Carey’s music, you’ll appreciate her perseverance and no-holds-barred account of where she came from, where she is, and where she’ll continue to shine — long after many others quit.

Get a box of tissues ready, read it, weep, and realize it’s your time to get up, get motivated, and get going.
